Flying Type Weakness

What Flying Pokémon are weak to, what they resist and how to beat them.

Flying type weakness is three types: Electric, Ice and Rock. Flying Pokémon are immune to Ground and resist Grass, Fighting and Bug. Flying moves hit Grass, Fighting and Bug for double damage.

Best counters to Flying

The best answer to a Flying Pokémon is something that hits it hard and shrugs off its attacks. These types do both:

  • Electrichits Flying for 2×, takes ½× from Flying moves.
  • Rockhits Flying for 2×, takes ½× from Flying moves.

Ice also hits Flying for double damage but doesn't resist it, so use it to attack first.

For example: Raichu, Alolan Golem and Hisuian Arcanine.

Flying dual types

A second type changes everything. These Flying pairings have the fewest weaknesses:

  • Flying / Steel: weak to Fire and Electric; immune to Poison and Ground. Example: Skarmory.

  • Flying / Electric: weak to Ice and Rock; immune to Ground. Example: Fan Rotom.

  • Flying / Ground: weak to Water and Ice (4×); immune to Electric and Ground. Example: Gliscor.

  • Flying / Normal: weak to Electric, Ice and Rock; immune to Ground and Ghost. Example: Pidgeot.

Tip

Rock moves are the Flying type's real problem. Rock Slide hits most Flying Pokémon hard, and Fire / Flying and Bug / Flying for 4×. Flying / Steel (Skarmory, Corviknight) takes normal damage from Rock and is weak only to Fire and Electric.
