Ice Type Weakness

What Ice Pokémon are weak to, what they resist and how to beat them.

Ice type weakness is four types: Fire, Fighting, Rock and Steel. Ice Pokémon resist only Ice, which makes Ice the weakest defensive type in the game. On offense it is one of the best: Ice moves hit Dragon, Grass, Ground and Flying for double damage.

Best counters to Ice

The best answer to an Ice Pokémon is something that hits it hard and shrugs off its attacks. These types do both:

  • Firehits Ice for 2×, takes ½× from Ice moves.
  • Steelhits Ice for 2×, takes ½× from Ice moves.

Fighting and Rock also hit Ice for double damage but don't resist it, so use them to attack first.

For example: Charizard, Ninetales, Alolan Dugtrio and Forretress.

Ice dual types

A second type changes everything. These Ice pairings have the fewest weaknesses:

  • Ice / Electric: weak to Fire, Fighting, Ground and Rock. Example: Frost Rotom.

  • Ice / Water: weak to Electric, Grass, Fighting and Rock. Example: Dewgong.

  • Ice / Ghost: weak to Fire, Rock, Ghost, Dark and Steel; immune to Normal and Fighting. Example: Froslass.

  • Ice / Steel: weak to Fire (4×), Fighting (4×) and Ground; immune to Poison. Example: Alolan Sandslash.

Check any pair yourself on the type chart.

Tip

Use Ice as a move, not as a body. A Water type with Ice Beam gets the Dragon and Flying coverage without the four weaknesses. If you do run an Ice Pokémon, keep a Water or Steel type beside it to absorb Fire, Rock and Steel moves.
