Rock Type Weakness

What Rock Pokémon are weak to, what they resist and how to beat them.

Rock type weakness is five types: Water, Grass, Fighting, Ground and Steel. That ties Grass for the most in the game. Rock Pokémon resist Normal, Fire, Poison and Flying, and Rock moves hit Fire, Ice, Flying and Bug for double damage.

Best counters to Rock

The best answer to a Rock Pokémon is something that hits it hard and shrugs off its attacks. These types do both:

  • Fightinghits Rock for 2×, takes ½× from Rock moves.
  • Groundhits Rock for 2×, takes ½× from Rock moves.
  • Steelhits Rock for 2×, takes ½× from Rock moves.

Water and Grass also hit Rock for double damage but don't resist it, so use them to attack first.

For example: Poliwrath, Machamp, Sandslash, Nidoqueen, Alolan Dugtrio and Forretress.

Rock dual types

A second type changes everything. These Rock pairings have the fewest weaknesses:

  • Rock / Bug: weak to Water, Rock and Steel. Example: Shuckle.

  • Rock / Grass: weak to Ice, Fighting, Bug and Steel. Example: Cradily.

  • Rock / Steel: weak to Water, Fighting (4×) and Ground (4×); immune to Poison. Example: Aggron.

  • Rock / Flying: weak to Water, Electric, Ice, Rock and Steel; immune to Ground. Example: Aerodactyl.

Tip

Rock / Ground (Rhydon, Rhyperior) takes 4× from Water and from Grass. It is great against Fire and Electric, but one Surf ends it. Always keep a Water-resist and a Grass-resist on the same team.
